instant messaging

Hi, i run a live cam web site and i am thinking of adding instant messaging. Whats the easiest way to go about it? The users login and a frame a the bottom of the page refreshes every 10 seconds, so i could check mysql for new messages and them automatically display them in a popup window. Maybe put all into a text file? How would i know if there is more than 1 and read one and then go onto the next?

Any help would be gretaly appreciated.

I'd just put it in a text file, and with every new message, add the new message to the top of the file, then display, say, the first 10 lines of the file.
