build menu from single table

Hi,
Maybe someone can help me :
I would like to build a menu from one table.

the table is as follows:

menu_id|menu_name|menu_order|

1 |article | 0 |

2 |product | 0 |

3 |internet | 1 |

4 |knife | 2 |

It should return something like this on a webpage:

-article
--internet (submenu)
-product
--knife (submenu)

so main menu item and sub menu item.
any ideas how I can get this result without performing a query for each main menu item to check if there are submenu items?

You could write a recursive function to pull the information:

function showMenu($orderID) {
$Query = "SELECT FROM *** WHERE ";
$Query .= "menu_order='$orderID'";

 //query db etc.

 while($row = db_fetch_object($db_result) {
      print("$row->menu_name");
      showMenu($row->menu_id);
 }

}
Now call the function with value '0':

showMenu(0);

That should do it, with some modification... obviously. :=)

I'm trying to do something similar to this. Our tables are remarkably similar -- except I have an added subcatagory field -- 'subof' contains the upper catagory that the subcatagory in question is located under.

This is fine at first glance -- however, I'm having problems trying to make non-convoluted code that would be able to construct a catagory tree my scripts could be able to understand. At present, if there's a subcatagory of a subcatagory of a catagory, if there's another subcat with the same name somewhere else, things get really hairy.

Anyone got a good way to construct a catagory tree?
