uploading files

I have written a script in php that will allow users to upload files. However, as many of you know, it's really hard to know you're uploading something. Is there a way to use PHP, Java, Javascript, Flash, DHTML to create an "in progress" to let the user know the status of their upload?

the bar in IE works for me.......

or you could do a popup onsubmit that would say "uploads can take a while, watch the status bar in your browser"
