Upload Error: Permissions problems

I checked out the previous posts on this, but I think my problem must be different.

After posting $userfile, I copied it using:

chmod("$userfile",0777);
copy($userfile, "/home/domain/domain-www/files/".$userfile_name);
am I chmod'ing the wrong file? Any other way to do this? I'm just getting a permissions error:

Warning: Unable to create '/home/domain/domain-www/files/origFilename.txt': Permission denied in /home/domain/domain-www/submissions/marketing.php on line 21

The webserver does not have write permissions to the directory... just as the error says 🙂
I'd try a "chgrp nobody" (or whatever group your webserver is in) for that directory and then "chmod 770" to it.

I must confess, I am unix illiterate. I don't know any more about chgrp or chmod than can be found in the PHP manual. I don't know how to identify what group my webserver is in (It's being hosted by Cedant). So now I'm using this code:

chgrp("$userfile[$i]","nobody");
chmod("$userfile[$i]",0770);

And in addition to the previous error, I'm getting this error:

Warning: chgrp failed: Operation not permitted in /home/domain/domain-www/submissions/marketing.php on line 20

Again, I'd appreciate any help

Ah okay, in that case you have to ask your ISP whether they have a writeable directory for you or they agree to make one. However I'm afraid they won't do that since it can prove to be a mayor security risk.

For what exactly do you need to write a file, maybe it can be done in a different way?

Thanks so much! I will talk to my ISP to see if they'll give me a writeable directory.

The writing comes in the latter half of a file upload. We are giving users (only those logged in) the ability to upload images and text files that will help us do our job. We're a publishing company, so we will be making coverart and will want to include a picture of the author. The rest of the text files could probably be send as a textarea, but they need to upload images. Any other ideas?

if we talk about a few small pictures here I'd say you can store them in a database. This is a thing that should not be done in mySQL and other relative DBs since they're not build for holding binary stuff -> they will get slow much earlier than with ASCII data.
Does your PHP support FTP? If yes you could to something like this:
User uploads a picture, PHP grabs the picture and uploads it to localhost via ftp. Weird, but as a workaround it should be okay.

Thanks so much! I believe that my PHP handles FTP. I'll have to give that a try. Thanks for all of your help and patience. You've been a lifesaver (Mmmm, cherry lifesavers... Ok, so it's 4:30 AM PST, give me a break.)! Yeah, well, now that we got past that... 🙂
