Logging in

I am very new at this (programming and PHP). I need to know how to do the following.
When a user logs onto our site with a correct username and password, I need the result page to list specific account information for that user. e.g. account balance, account currency and so on. If they log in with incorrect username/password they are presented with a page telling them that we don't have their username/password is not on record.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

There are plenty of tutorials on this topic. Do a search on google or your favorite seach engine.

It involves working with forms (plenty tutorials) and reacting on variables.

A good place to start might be Devshed.com.

In short:

build a form, submit the form. Look up in the db if the username exists and if the password is correct. If yes (if clause), show the data. If not (else clause) show the other text.
