number of new imap messages

Does anyone have a snippet of code that can tell how many new messages are in an IMAP folder/mailbox?

I've tried to read the help in the manual, but I don't understand a lot of the terminology.

I've seen examples that tell me how to list all of the messages in the folder, but I don't know how to tell which ones aren't read.

All I need is to put a little message on the home page of my intranet that says, "Hello {username}, you have {number} new messages." Then they can tell at a glance if they need to check thier email or not.

P.S. I just started using squirrel mail. This program rocks! If you need a decent web mail/address book, look no further. It doesn't even need IMAP support in PHP. check it out at squirrelmail.org.

The easiest way to do it is:

$user_id and $password set already
$imaph = imap_open ("{localhost:143}INBOX", $user_id, $password);

$mailbox = imap_check ($imaph);

echo "Hello ".$user_id.", you have ".$mailbox->Recent." new message(s).";

Note: I have never used the imap extensions to php, this only sounds logical from the documentation though.
