how do I fill out field with the form?

Hi,

I got a little problem here with the fact that input type="file" has got no value field.
Here's what I got working:

1) create a project
I have users fill out a form and store the
values of the fields in a table (MySQL).

2) edit a project
Users go to this page and get the same form
as on the 'create project' page, just now
all the fields are already filled out with
the correct values (which I extract from
the DB according to the id).
Except one field: input type=file of course wont accept a value.

The question is: how do I fill out this field with the correct value from the DB?

I hope my question makes any sense and maybe someone can help me solve this problem.

Why do you need to show any value in file name field? Just remember that it is your internal server path - does user really need to know it? Don't think so. If all that you need is just to show user that some file is already uploaded (that field is not empty), you can just show preview of this file (if it is a picture) or a link to it.
Usually users always think they want to see this path in file name field just to be sure that file is there, but server path is quite useless for them - and once they see server path, they always get disapointed that you're showing them abracadabra... :-)

I think the short answer is: you can't. If you pre-populate the 'file' field with a value, when the form submits, the browser will search for that file on the users local hard disk - and as you don't know which files are on the users disk, this would probably cause an error.

You'll have to work around this by maybe, on your edit page, have two bits of information - maybe 'Current File: ', with information about the currently uploaded file, and then a new 'file' box with 'Replace with file: ', or something, so that if a user uploads a new file, you can delete and replace the current file...
