how to create a 'difficult' string

Dear Reader,

I'm 16 years old and I'm trying to learn PHP & SQL besides my school (because they don't offer this..)! But I don't understand this!

I would like to make a string which has a text and a old sting in it so, I thought that would be something like this:

$item = 'item' & '$question';

but the word item changes in a`t or something like that.. So do I have to use another character to connect these 2 thing?\

$sNewstring = 'some text'.$sOldString.'more text';

Vincent is right about the manual.
when you want something to concatenate (in dutch that is called 'aaneenschakelen') you can use a period(.)
so:
$item = 'item' . $question; // is correct
$item = 'item' . '$question'; // is wrong (cos of quotes!)

another possibility is:
$item = 'item';
$item .= $question;
