Subdomains on the fly

I got a site wich users can register at, and instead of giving them http://siteurl/profile?id=$id, I want to give them http://username.siteurl/ - How can I easily do that on the fly?

While your question is intruguing and I'd love to help you, this is probably the wrong forum for this question -- this sort of thing is more dependent on the server, and as such you'll probably got a faster and better answer if you ask it in a forum dedicated to your server software. However, I could be wrong and someone here just might have the answer you're looking for.

You've got your own server??

If not, you allways have to 'register' the subdomain at your host. That means, you allways have to contact your host, if you want to open one more account.

And for creating subdomains if you have your own server, you should try www.hotscripts.com or sth. like that

Yeah, I got my own server. I thought since the registration script is in PHP, you'd have to make PHP create the subdomain...

Someone told me that I should look into "the apache directions", where can I find that?

You must set your DNS Server translate "*.yourdomain" to your own server.
then use javascript to redirect the brower to your php-script:

or you redirect all error 404 requests to your php [redirect.php] and then handle that in the script.

redirect.php:

if word == "john" redirect to server.com/something

if word == "debbie" redirect to server.com/something_else

couple of ways:
first at least youd have to create the subdomain directories on the server.

then look at /usr/local/apache/conf/virtualhosts.conf where virtual host info should be stored.

then if neccesary: change the DNS (if you're allowed) to point the subdomain to the correct ip-addy.

then either:
change the .htaccess script to point usr.domain.com to domain.com/~usr or make a .cgi/php script that does the same.

I've been trying to hook up subdomains myself. I've had success using freeware scripts, eg localjump, subman etc, but they all seem to have a major flaw; they are frame based and search engines cannot spider the pages properly. this may not affcet you, but if you want to submit individual subdomains as i do...trouble. If anyone knows how to get around this, please give me a bell.
