Count current active sessions?

Anyone know how to get a count of currently active sessions?

I had a similar problem. I got around this by timestamping every visitor and updating every page or every 30 seconds. Then do a simply query and check for equal times matches within 30seconds. This is the only way to real count active sessions and visitors.

Im sure there would be a way to count the current instantiated sessions though through a server variable or something yes? becuase it has to cycle through each one anyway to find any data related to the session user.
