compare strings with/without spaces

hello everyone!!

My problem is that I don't want people to enter the same name into a table. It all works except if you enter the same name followed by a space:

eg) the name "Vanessa" is in the table.
You can't enter "Vanessa" but you can enter "Vanessa ". I don't want them to do this either.

Any suggestions??

i'd use the php function trim() before working with a username.

'$name = trim($name)' will delete leading and trailing whitespace from the variable.
