Page Redirection

Hi,

I just started to learn php and I tried something that doesn't works:-(

My index.html opens a popup containing a login form (html as well). This form (method="POST") calls a php file that check into a database if the login and the password are correct and should redirect my index.html (popup opener) to a new page (depending obviously on the result of the login).

The form is OK, the database connection as well. I encountered troubles when I tried to redirect my page. I saw somewhere that the sollution was with the header() function, but I get an error message(header already sent earlier line2). I'd also like to know how to redirect the opener window...

If someone had a solution to my problems, it would be very nice.

Read the manual please.
http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.header.php
says:
"Remember that the header() function must be called before any actual output is sent, either by normal HTML tags blank lines in a file, or from PHP. It is a very common error to read code with include(), or require(), functions, or another file access function, and have spaces or empty lines that will output before header() is called. The same problem exists when using a single PHP/HTML file."

Hi Fred,

You will encounter header problems if you have already sent any data over HTTP to the browser (i.e. something is printed on the page).

You cannot reference the opener page using PHP and will have to use PHP to print something like:

and avoid PHP Header sending altogether.

Personally I would imagine having a login form on the actual page as being a better solution, as you can avoid the javascript functions (which might be turned OFF).

I just saw a line in the header function that tells something like:"Avoid blank line before the headers...".

I tried it (put comments instead of blank line), and it works fine:-)

I'll have a try with $PHP_AUTH_USER and $PHP_AUTH_PW and see how it runs. It could maybe be a way to follow...

i'm not sure whether i understood your problem but it seems like you try to act client-side with a server-side language which is just not going to work.
try this:

index.html opens the loginpopup
someone fills out the form and submits

so far you have it.

now in the popup the php page validates the user.
on success it generates javascript that changes the url of the parent.document.location.href (hope i got that right)

this generated html/javascript will be sent to the users browser and it will be interpreted. this way the "big" windowurl will be changed.

I've been looking thru all of IE's options, but I have never been able to find a way to turn off Java scripting, since JS is built into the browser. How is this possible?

I never noticed that "Custom Level" button under Security Options. Thanks for your input.

For those interested, the full path (for I.E. 5.5) is:

Security >> Custom Level >> Microsoft VM >> Java Permissions

One has to wonder why anyone would choose to disable this option.

I have also heard that Microsoft is no longer (in an apparent swipe at Netscape, Sun, etc.) going to support Javascript in any of its future browser versions. This seems very short-sighted to me, considering the amount of JS out there on the Net.

If they do this then I predict a resurgence of Netscape and other browsers like Opera. I know I'll drop I.E. like a bad habit if they make good on their threat. Microsquish had better think this one over very carefully.

I'm sure you'd disable this option if, like me, you're tired of all the pop up/under/etc.. ads that clutter your desktop.

As for the IE javascript thing, are you sure that you aren't thinking about them pulling support for Netscape's plug-ins in favor of active x?

Microsoft have never officially supported JavaScript, but their own interpretation of the ECMA-262 standard, called JScript, which is on version 5 or something. Microsoft.com usings Dynamic HTML quite a lot, and therefore it seems unlikely that they will drop it.

By the way, Javascript isn't where you said it was, Microsoft VM refers to the Microsoft Virtual Machine, which is used to run Java (which Microsoft are abandoning because it's proprietory software - biggest load of bullshit I've ever heard - MS avoiding it becuase the source isn't open!).

The actual options are:

Security > Custom Level > Scripting > Active Scripting.

Quite why MS can't simply use the same notation as Opera, Mozilla, Konqueror et al, is beyond me...
