SQL column re-definition?!

Dear Readers,

I know this is not a real PHP-question.. but the people on this forum respond way faster than the Yahoo-SQL forum.. And the responses are better!

Is it possible to change the lenght of a:
varchar column?

I defined it as 32 chars long but I wanna have it longer. I can drop the table and make it again but then I lose all the data 🙁

We do something like this in my company. I think we export the data for backup, then drop the table, create the new table and then reload the data from backup.

I think that's what we do. you might see if that will solve your problem. Post results back here please

It depends on which SQL-database you are using.

I'm not sure if this is ANSI-SQL, but check the ALTER TABLE [TableName] MODIFY [ColumnName] [NewDefinition] command. It works at least in MySQL.

I'm using PostgreSQL on a Debian Linux Server... I think you know what kind it is.. because I'm using Linux/PHP/PostgreSQL since 2 months...
