Pattern Matching Problem...

I've been having quite a bit of trouble matching a pattern that spans multiple lines...

example:
this pattern
more stuff here
more stuff here
that pattern

I'm trying to pull out everything between
"this pattern" and "that pattern"

When I use:
eregi ("RESULTS(.*)</font></i>", $line, $out)
I get a pattern match only when the pattern is on the same line...

Any suggestions???

eregi("^{this(.*)that$",$line,$out);}
echo $out[1];
