Session timeout

I am struggling with the PHP session functions:
-How do I set the timeout for a session ?
-What event starts the timing ?
I am a bit confused since changing the session.cookie_lifetime variable in PHP.ini seems to have an effect, but not predictable.
I'm running Xitami 2.4D7 and PHP4.

The lifetime variable you have mentioned is exactly what you have to deal with:

if the variable session.lifetime = 0 the session will end when the browser is closed.

Every other setting is lifetme in seconds

e.g:

sesson.lifetime = 60 :

------> would let the session 'live' for 1 minute.
