Regular Expression Question

I\'m totally hopeless at regular expression, so I was wondering if somone could tell me i it\'s possible to come up with a statement which will remove quotation marks from a string, except when they are preceded with an escape character backslash.

Try:
$str = ereg_replace(\"([^{\\])[\\"]+\",} \"\\1\", $str);

Damn, this forum added extra slashes to the pattern. You might wanna run the pattern thru stripslashes() to get the result I intended!
