There's no need to know basics to develop in php as well as all other languages. Just need examples of code. I started to learn many languages that way. You'll never reach a hight level if you only relie on somebody else's code, but it works just fine.
Why don't you just tell him you don't know how it runs instead of blaming him to look for hard codes???
He's looking for that for a project (scholar probably), why trying to desperate him? helping him would be better don't you think?
For my part, I'm afraid, but I'm very new in php and know nothing yet about carts. I just wanna say that above.
I'm sure you'll find better guys here "blessen". Hope this will be soon enough for you ;-)
