PHP/MySql interface - related items

I would like to add to an existing database interface relations between items (articles), so in the front end they can appear as related articles to the article displayed.
What confuses me, is how to present this in the admin interface together with the entry form for an article. It would be simple to have a form where the author enters the ids of the related articles, but as the authors may not be really familiar with what ids are or how to locate them, I am trying to figure out an easier way.
Could somebody guide me to some examples?

A good way to do this would be to create a little search engine such that the author can enter a keyword or two about the article they've written, and it will return other articles matching those keywords and show their title. Then the author can select (using checkboxes, perhaps) which articles he wishes to to use as a related article.
