http 404 error trap

I tried to make it work, i made a file called : ".htaccess"

Containing the ErrorDocument-Line in it, Used the right Filenames for the 404error.html-document.

Then copied it to the Root Directory of my www.

So can anybody tell me what i am dooing wrong?
