nested while loops

I have a table which has days as columns and names as rows, what i want to do is to count the number of days for each name.
I thought that the best way of doing this would be to call day1 name1 $name1d1 day3 name 1 $name1d3. With this i think i can do a while within a while, eg. tell it to select $name1d$number, loop for each value of $number, and loop this for each of $name1, $name2, $name3 etc.
THe only problem i have is that i'm not entirely sure of the syntax and also if you can call the 'outer loop's variable in the 'inner loop' (ie call the name number in the day number loop?
Does this even make sense 😉
Incidentally which would be better a while or a for loop ? (the number of days & names is 5)

You have a database with a table that contains days as columns, so something like
sun | mon | tue... etc

And you want to know how many colums there are with the name John in it, and how many with the name karl etc...?

its not a database just a simple mail form to record what days a member of staff has off sick, so there are check boxes under each of the days, on each row. each row being 1 persons record for the week.
does that make more sense

so it would be

|mon | tues | wed | thur | fri | name |
| x | x | x | x | x | Jon smith|

So basically you're counting the x's in each line.

Then you would indeed use nested loops,
one to move from line to line,
and one to count the x's.

I'd simply 'explode()' each line into an array, and loop through the first 5 elements to check each one if it's an x.
