Regular Expression Functions

Hi all.I have read the bit about ereg_replace() in the PHP manual, and I know that it basically does the same as str_replace(), but has some more features (Like paranthesised substrings). Could somebody please explain how to use these additional features?

Regular expressions are very powerful, I recomend you buy the book mastering regular expressions by orielly I just read it 2 weeks ago and its great, I also read several articles online, one good one I think is http://www.devshed.com/Server_Side/Administration/RegExp/
