Browser escaping characters

I have a simple article submission app. After the form is submitted, I display the article for approval before it is submitted to the db.

It appears that the browser (IE 5.1) is escaping quotes and single quotes.

Example:

Jim's coat is blue.

results in :

Jim\'s coat is blue.

Can I prevent this?
