Double formatting

Hi all,

I'm trying to format a variable in the format of a currency.

Ex.

$price = $item_price; (where $item_price is extracted from MySQL)
$subtotal = $quantity * $price;
When I perform this, if price is a single digit value it returns an integer. I need it to be double. Any recommendations?

If you'd like the leading dollar sign:

$subtotal = sprintf( "$.2f", $subtotal );

Otherwise:

$subtotal = sprintf( ".2f", $subtotal );

Just keep in mind that usually, if a monetary amount is a fraction of a penny, you need to
add 1 penny. This isn't much of an issue with subtotals, in my experience, since you're dealing with a whole quantity of whole items. But, if you're dealing with tax, or anything else that may return a fraction of a penny, be careful.

One option is to type cast the price.
$price = double($item_price)

While this will typecast the variable to a double, it does nothing for the output format.

print 10;
and
print (double)10;
both output "10"

The way I understand it, the original question was how to get the number to display as 10.00 not 10.

If I misinterpretted the desired result, I'm sorry 🙂

Actually, you lead me down the correct path by using sprintf. This is what I used to yield the desire result.

sprintf("%01.2f", $subtotal)
