new to php - please help

I've never programmed in PHP before but I'm considering using it to develop a site I'm working on. I'd like to build a membership system that allows people to have a profile & save their favorite recipes to a list. For the recipes themselves I'd like to be able to scale them (ie if recipe serves 4 what are the amounts of ingredients for 6 people?) and rate/review them. I'd like to allow people to display the submitters profile if they are registered by clicking on a link. Is this a huge project to tackle? I've read a couple of the articles here about mass customization etc. but its not exactly what I'm looking for. Could you point me in the right direction? Thanks for the help! 🙂

It is not a huge project but by no means tiny. IF you understand how to retrieve data from databases vis sql you have a good start. If you have experience with other languages that will help but starting with a new language and developing a product is never a small task as you have to learn the tricks.

Your best starting point is the php manual. And while you are in there read up on the specific functions that are associated with the database you are planning to use.
