PHP + gd library

Hi,
I have got a doubt. Is PHP using some wrapper functions to output the image to web browser. The gdImageGif can output the image contents only to a file. How is that functionality used in PHP to output GIF to web browser.

Could you try and explain me how to get gdlib working please?
I'm new at all those technical things and encountered many problems (I managed to get apache and php working correctly (Miracle I believe :-) )).
I downloaded gdlib but don't understand what to do with it, where to put it, etc...

Any help will be highly appreciated.
