explode, replace, etc

There seems to be a difference in dealing with '/t' '/n' and '/n' "/n" etc. Does anyone know what the actual difference is and how ' and " should be used properly.

everything between single quotes (') is taken literally.
Everything between double quotes (") is interpreted.

so "\n" prints a newline, and '\n' prints a slasch and the letter N.

Note, If you put single quotes between double quotes, the single quotes are not interpreted.

so this:
echo "hello'\n' there";
would print
hello'
'there

and not
hello'\n' there
