replace word in php pages

I have a web site i want to set up some content for word use on the site definitions for words througtout the site is there a way to search the websites for word and replace them with a link to a db call referring to that word

Let say I have word like computer or modem I want to make them cliclable to tell the user the definition of the word the definition is kept in a db I have a popup with contains the following

$result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM definition WHERE def_id = $def_id");

What I want to do is have a script that would look for certain word and replace them with a link to that popup with the def_id attached

u can creat an active word in html by adding a hyperlink like that :

<a href="...">Click</a>

right ..?
the same in php u have to imbed it like:
in the while and the row's creation ..
let us say we are selecting the name of a company from a database and we want this name to be clicked to open the URL of the company :
the field of company name = company; and the field of the its web address = URL .. so:

echo("<p><a href='".$row[URL]."'>".$row[company]."</a></p>");

is that what u want ..?

Ok I know what you mean but what I want to do is have a script search all the page on my site for a word ie. computer and replace it with <a href...?def_id=$def_id>computer</a> on all pages containing this word.

I know I have to read all pages in the dir search for the word then have it replaced with the link

How can this be done
