charset pb !

Hi All

I run php on mac os x French and got this strange problem with accent.

my data cames from a mysql database (for example data = "É" )
when i do this
$txt = strtr( $txt,
"ÀÁÂÃÄÅàáâãäåÒÓÔÕÖØòóôõöøÈÉÊËèéêëÇçÌÍÎÏìíîïÙÚÛÜùúûüÿÑñ",
"AAAAAAaaaaaaOOOOOOooooooEEEEeeeeCcIIIIiiiiUUUUuuuuyNn");

echo $txt;

this print É

if i set $txt="É" and red the opration , it works. i got E.

What's wrong !

My database is the default install, and php so.

If anyone has a answer, don't hesitate.

In the 'test' database, I stored "Évêrÿthïng îs jüst pëåchÿ"

$select_ar = mysql_fetch_array(mysql_query("SELECT * FROM test WHERE fieldname='TEST'"));
$txt = $select_ar['chartext'];
$txt = strtr( $txt, "ÀÁÂÃÄÅàáâãäåÒÓÔÕÖØòóôõöøÈÉÊËèéêëÇçÌÍÎÏìíîïÙÚÛÜùúûüÿÑñ", "AAAAAAaaaaaaOOOOOOooooooEEEEeeeeCcIIIIiiiiUUUUuuuuyNn");
echo $txt;

This works for me.
