Next id in db...

Hey guys, hope you can help me with this.

I have to send an ID from a form to another page which will receive that ID. Now i have to make the script, on that other page, look that ID up in the db and find out what the NEXT ID is. Then the same script should redirect to another page with the new next ID so that i can receive the new id on the last page.

how should i do that??

I've developed a system where i store all userdocs in database (mySQL), using templates and special tags to create content.
Now i want to be able to store php-scripts in the database aswell, but the code is handled as text. I've tried header Content-type and even considered streaming the databasecontent to file and then use include... Anybody got an idea on how i can do this - i'm kind of stuck.

Could you say a bit more about what you're trying to accomplish, rather than just the how? It's not that clear, at least to me.

Most dbms' do provide a way to find out a unique key value for the row you just INSERTed. It's less common to have a way to find out the next value, however, since this information is of extremely limited value. That's because it's not really usable for anything without destroying any pretence of being safely multi-user.

Hmm.. How your id:s are connected i don't know but couldn't you send it as a tripple: instead of sending the id send id, parent, child. Then you could go "up" or "down" as you'd like. (if i understood you right)
