Self-submitting form

I have a self-sybmitting for for registering new users, but i can't for the life of me get the second part of the script to dsiplay.
the code is as following:

if (!IsSet($stage)) {
/print out registration form/
$tpl->assign(PHP_SELF, $PHP_SELF);
$tpl->parse(REGISTER, "register");
$tpl->FastPrint(REGISTER);
}
else {
--analyze submitted data and insert into database code here.

}

even after i submit the form i get the first part of the script displayed again. Any i deas on hw to slove this?

What do you get if you just add a
  print $stage;
inside the first subroutine?
Also, try putting print statements in there for the rest of your form variables. Since $stage is not getting picked up from the form, perhapse your register-globals is not set on?

Really weird.

Try adding echo "Stage: \"$stage\" \n"; as the first command in register.phps. What happens?
View source - is <input type="hidden" name="stage"...> really there?
What's with other form variables? Do you get their values?
phpinfo() => check $HTTP_POST_VARS (can do so with print_r($HTTP_POST_VARS) as well, but phpinfo() might give you more ideas)

I'll be off-line for about 8 hours and then I'll get back to you. Please post whatever you find.

When i add : print_r($HTTP_POST_VARS) to my code i get the vaules of the varibles (Including stage which is set to a value of '1' by the hidden input. Only problem is the script is still not going to the next stage, wich should be to execute the elseif statement.

I founf register_globals in my php.ini file, but it's commented out, and under it it says:
; - register_globals = Off
; Global variables are no longer registered for input data (POST, GET, cookies,
; environment and other server variables). Instead of using $foo, you must use
; $HTTP_POST_VARS["foo"], $HTTP_GET_VARS["foo"], $HTTP_COOKIE_VARS["foo"],
; $HTTP_ENV_VARS["foo"] or $HTTP_SERVER_VARS["foo"], depending on which kind
; of input source you're expecting 'foo' to come from.

Would this have anything to do with my problem?

Looks like it. If you get a value when you
  print $HTTP_POST_VARS['stage'];
but not when you
  print $stage;
then you must use the first form when you check the condition for processing the form:

if ($HTTP_POST_VARS['stage'] <> 1) {
  // print form
}
else {
  // process form
}

In that case, I agree with Richard.

This behavior depends on register_globals option.
