Strip & replace

Ok, I don't know exactly what to look for but I couldnt find it

what Im trying todo is pull out the first instance of an item.

for ex.
/Articles/Testdir/extrabs.gif
or
/Charts/morebs/otherstuff.gif

Thats my variable, I would like to get just the Articles part. but its not always gonna be just Articles, it will change with the menu line up.

I've tried various things, with little luck.

try $my_array = explode(."/",$var) and the first non-empty index in the array will be what you need, or you can split() the var too.
