Selecting a phrase

Hey,
I am just wanting to know how I would select a phrase between two symbols and convert it into a variable? That sorta doesn't make sense so I will give you an example.

In my text box I have <image>imagename.gif</image> now when the user clicks select I want the string between <image> and </image> to become a variable. Say we call it $a. Is there anyway of doing this or does any one have an article that will show me how to do this?

Apart from the usual substr() commands, you can also use regexps.

you will end up with something like
preg_match("/<image>(.*?)<\/image>/", $sString, $aMatch);
echo $aMatch
