Difference Between Dates

I am having more problems than I'd like to admit with a very simple thing.

I want a countup, not a countdown.

It's been XX days since an event occured.

My first stab was to change both dates to Julian, subtract and I'm done. But, my PHP installation on my server doesn't have the right libs.

But, maybe I'm going about it all wrong? Is there any easier, more direct method?

I would perform these steps (see documentation for function reference):

1. convert date into a unix timestamp using mktime() -> $date
2. subtract this from the actual timestamp:
   $difference = time() - $date;
3. $difference is seconds since the old date. $days = $difference/60/60/24;

$days now is the number of days passed since $date.
