Changing variable without reloading page

Hi,

I need some help on the following: Is it possible to change the value of a variable with a simple text link, without reloading the page? Now I have used the following: 'a href="mypage.php?variable=newvalue'. When you click the link the page reloads and $variable has got a new value. But it would look much better when only the variable changed and the rest of the page remained the same (stable and visible). Is there a solution?

You could do it probably with Javascript, but PHP is a server side application so... no.

An if I include a datafile where I define the values of several variables (they contain text that has to be displayed), would it be possible to display the right variable with a Javascript? (this way the server is only used when the page is loaded the first time, right?) And what would be a way to do this?
