Test checkbox value in another frame

I have a page with multiple frames.

In the left frame, there is a dynamically built list of checkbox items pulled from a database.

In the right frame, there is a data entry form with a number of freeform text fields, and a submit button for entering new data into the database.

I would like to be able to press the submit button in the right frame, and grab the values of the checkboxes in the left frame along with the freeform text from the right frame and load all this into the database together.

Why? Because I don't want to refresh the left frame (40-50 items) between loading data entered in the right frame. Multiple records will be entered into the right frame and loaded into the database in one session.

Only with JavaScript. You can have one hidden field in right frame for each checkbox in the left frame. In onSubmit event handler of the right frame use this (for each checkbox):

if (top.leftFrame.document.formName.checkBoxName)
document.formName.hiddenName.value = top.leftFrame.document.formName.value;

This is clumsy and I strongly suggest you to avoid using frames. Put all in one document, in one frame.

The duplicate hidden form element is probably not going to work for me.

The list of checkbox elements is between 100 and 150 items. The drill here is that the user gets to choose up to 4, as well as enter freeform text.

The values are subject categories for an issue and subject index for a magazine. Right now I have 102 possible values, of which any given magazine article can have up to 4 assigned.

The user is entering the article title, author, issue and selecting subject(s). They can also add a new subject if an existing one does not exist.

I hate frames, however I'm struggling with the options to manage the large array of subject possibilities, allowing the user to choose one to four as well as adding new subjects, and not pulling the list from the database every time a new article is added.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Maybe sessions? With the same session id, you will be able to access all registered variables. If they were not set (i.e. called from right frame which doesn't have check boxes), latest values will be used.
