change password of a mailbox

Is it possible to change the password of an imap/pop mailbox trough a php script?

(Problem: Hosting company where I have to setup mailboxes with initial passwords-> user's on my simple webmail interface can't change their password)

yes it is ...
Depends much on which popsoftware you are using ...
And how in stores the authinformation.
If your pop3server is using the sysmteaccounts you will need to run php as cgi with root permissions (assuming the server runs an **ix OS).
Or you need to execute an external wich is owned by root an and has "set UID on execution" enabled.
Beware: all this depends much on your os,pop3,php,apache configuration !
Maybe you can give me a deeper view into that..
