linebreaks from a text field area

hi,

i'm trying to build a simple guest book with php, and sofar it working fine exept for the fackt that, i cant seem to get line breaks in.

i take the text input from a text area, and then write it to a text file, with a few table tags around it.

problem i cant figure out, how to replace the linefeeds, the uswer enters, with the <br> tag....

Before you actually put the users text from the textarea into the table do the following

$data = nl2br($data).

This will automatically replace all instances of a hard return into a <br> tag.

Narch - The whole idea of the forum is not so much to give out 100% correct answers but to try and get people to start thinking.

If all answers were given out freely then you'd never learn anything.

damnit, its still not working ;(

any one got any idea what i do wrong?
this is what i use: (i get the input from a textarea in a form)

Are you sure you have the correct permissions set on "guestbook.txt"? Have you tried writing to the file without any html?

Entry by: ".$name."\n"."From: ".$city."\n".$entry

yep, it its read write enabled, and it does write to stuff to my file, i just can seem to make insert the line breaks ;(

my out put is like

name: "name entry
"from "city entry"
wrote:
"sdkl;fjlsdfj jfxdkjsdfkjsfdkjsdfk sdfljksfdkjsdf sdfsdfsdsdf sdfff"

(the spaces in the wrote part were where i made a newline in my text area..)
