Using PHP for Icon Boards

Hey everyone. I am making my website right now and am sure to implement a forum thingy. I need to know the basics of creating forums and what kinds of functions and stuff is needed. Thanks in advance!

Yeah at the moment im just putting the finishing touches to my forum. noDbForum.

It doesnt need a database, stores and reads everything from flat-files and runs seriously fast. And thats taken me 4 weeks, so youll need to do some studying.

It really depends what kinda functions you want the forum to have and what you have to work with like a db for example, like i said its taken me 4 weeks to put together these functions,

-Profiles
-Smilies
-Bad Word Filter
-Control Panel
-Fully Threaded Discussions
-X Amount Of Categories
-X Amount Of Forums etc...
