Forgot function name for compressing pg.

I need to compress a page before sending it to the browser. I forgot the name of the function, and hoped someone would remind me. Also, does it work on a CGI configured server? I thought it was something like gzip() But I can't find it.

I also have heard that it will compress a page automatically depending on the browser. Should you browser not support it, it won't compress it. Is that correct?
