limit characters

Is there anyway that I can limit the amount of characters displayed in a variable.

For instance, I am taking data out of my mysql database and assigning it the variable of $content.

$content stores a large amount of data (i.e. an article) is there anyway I can get it to show the first 100 characters or 40 words?

Hi,

use the substr() function to reduce the number of characters:

$short_content = substr($content,0 , 100);

I tried that and it worked. One more question though is there any way you can do the same with words instead of characters?

your problem is very easy !I donot think your effort can solve your problems, and i think you'd better insert a new field in your table whose name is title .
in this field you insert a the 40~100 characters then echo the title field
like follows :
echo $row['title'];
but not echo $row['contents']
