I was wondering. since i don't have access to a mysql (or other databases) on my website. is there a simple way to perhaps convert those types of snippits to a file format. or a recomended way to read/write a counter script. most of the infernal snippits are either a one counter per file and or use databases. i'm and experenced c programer, and i could code this in c easily, but php seems a bit better suited for this problem, since i'm developing on a MacOS X system with apache and php4 and and hosted on a Redhat 7.1 w/apache/php4.

also. can anyone out there help me with an error document problem?? i'm trying to get a php doc as an error document, and my host is too, its no working.

Wether it is easy or wise to use a file instead of a database depends on what you want to do with the data.

If you want a simple hit-counter then you can use a file, providing you take great care of file-locking.

If you want to make a user-database, or do more than simple 'select' and 'insert' then you are much much much better off using a database. (or you will end-up writing your own database)
