I just found a site that carlessly left .bak files laying around. all scripts end in .cgi but are wierdly encrypted. Scripts start with ELF, what language is this or how is it compiled?

ELF is an object format used by some UNIXs. /bin/ls might have the same header... See the 'file' command.
