pass javascript variable to php

I've got a checkbox that I use javascript to determine if it is checked or not and assign the outcome of that to a javascript variable. Is there a way I can assign it to a php variable instead?

*note I do not want to hit a submit button in order to get the status of the checkbox into php.

The PHP is server script language. You must pass the veriable to php in next page or refresh this page to send it.

I don't know why you can not submit it.

If you want to change another veriable in the form you can use javascript to do it. If you want save it to database you must to pass it to php.
