calculating values in rows

in my table i have a fields (request )that holds values like 1,10, 50 etc. How is it possible to calculated the values (add them to each other) so that variable $total holds the total amount?
example: if i have 2 rows and one of them has the value of 1 and the other 50 how can i add them so that $total will hold 51?

Hope i explained it clrearly enough. Any help is highly appreciated.

as you loop through the rows, just do something like

$total=$total+($row['request']);

that will keep a running total of all the rows you have.
