How do i querie mysql and list the hightest 5 of a field. It is to show the most downloaded files. When a file is download is adds 1 to a field called dl. I need to list the highest 5 in order.

I am trying this but no real luck! :-

SELECT * FROM db_name ORDER BY viewed DESC LIMIT 5

Any help will be appreciated

Yes in SQL you would do that like this:

<?php

mysql_query("
SELECT * FROM table_name ORDER BY viewed DESC LIMIT 5");

?>

Which would:

-select all fields from table_name
-order them by viewed filed
-print out the top 5

what is in db_name?
SQL queries select data from tables in databases, not just databases.
And tablenames are never quoted.

I wouldnt say never.. phpmyadmin by default puts the table name in single quotes.. but i agree it is not a normal procedure to put them in quotes at all.

Let's not forget that PHPMyAdmin, while being a lovely tool is not really the image of perfection when it comes to working with MySQL. (We all know about the data-dump fiasco) When it comes to MySQL's syntax I prefer to go by what the manual says.

But the main point I was trying to make is that putting quotes in there (or backticks in this case?!?) might/will cause either PHP or MySQL to throw an error.
