People,
I have got the blues , let me explain. I have a client who has a site which is mainly in english but has a german and french section to it. Our clients in-house designer used dreamweaver to create the site and I use php to then add things to it such as the forms , autoresponders, time and date on top of page etc etc . Now all was going well until all of a sudden she noticed that the french and german sections has strange characters in it. What has happened, the simply answer would appear to be that she has not used the correct escape characters to represent the special french and german characters ,page encoding is correct i.e. <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"> .
The one thing that upsets this theory is that the index page ( with french in it ) which is a php page is shown correctly in the browser even though on that she has not used the escape characters. Also the parts of the site that have special characters did appear to be working for a couple of days before the special characters where lost. I should point out that most of the pages which which showed the incorrect characters where .shtml pages .
So in a nutshell I want to know
a) why things did not go wrong from the beginning when they should have.
b) why did they choose to go wrong when they did.
c) why the index.php file did not go wrong at all even though it did not have the escape characters in it.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me on this subject.
Regards
John
