mass e-mail from database list time-out?

I've got a script which sends out a newsletter to all the subscribers in my database. BUT, it takes forever! I know I can extend my timeout length to avoid that, but I would like to have a server-side program to send the e-mails for me (rather than waiting for my browser to finish). Meanwhile, i can go on surfing the net.

Is this kind of server-side executable something php can do, or do I have to use a vbscript? any thoughts / ideas, or just point me in the right direction?

A search is always a good start.

about the timeout: use set_time_limit()

about the server-side executable:
you can compile PHP as a CGI, which means you can run it from the commandline.
Read the installation section of the PHP manual for more information.

About the speed, I hope you are not using PHP's standard mail function, it is horribly slow. Search the code-snippets section for an email class that talks directly to a mailserver. Much faster.
