site navigation trouble

1st: I know that this is an often asked question, but i really couldn't find a suitable answer in the archives.

I'm looking for a way to create an dynamic navigation menu for my site. In the past I used two arrays, but this had serveral disadvantages: the hierarchy was limited to two levels and the linktext had to be equal to the link-destination.

Can anyone give me a hint how I could do this? I would like to have the navigation in a seperate ascii file like that and the number of levels shouldn't be limited:

-element1(destination of element1)
--sub_element1(destination)
--sub_element2(destination)
-element2(destination of element1)
--sub_element1(destination)
--sub_element2(destination)

What do you mean by "dynamic"? Who changes the menu structure whether it's in a separate file or not?

I you just want to maintain the menu in one file and have that affected in all pages, then just put the html into a seperate file and <i>include()</i> the file in your other documents.

I mean that it should be created on the fly: If someone clicks on an element in the navigation-bar a list with all the sub-elements of this element opens under the element and the open subelement has a different color. E.g.:

1.This is my menu (now it showes only the elements)

-Welcome
-News
-Products
-Contact

I click on "Products":

-Welcome
-News
-Products
--Internet Products
--Developement Tools
--Hardware
-Contact

Now the first sub-element of "Products", which is "Internet Products" is now opened in the content part of the page and displayed in a different color.

This example has only 2 hirachical-levels, but it should be possible to have as many levels, as I want.
