i want to know how to prompt a user to download a textfile, every time they click on the link it just opens it up in internet explorer. Thanks.
thats a browser problem...
unless theres some way i havent heard of, you will just have to tell the user to right click on a link and hit "save target as..."

Instaed of giving link to plain text file, you can compress the file in .zip format and then give link to that file. As .zip is unopenable file through explorer it will give download box and I think your problem will get solved plus it will also reduse the size of the downloadable file.
