Read File to String Var

I know this must be simple, because it seems like something people would wan't to do, but I can't seem to get it right...I want to read a text file and put ALL of its contents into a variable as a string. Can someone show me how, plz? I'm trying to learn PHP after having been on the ASP side for a while, but I'm having trouble 'translating' this part. TIA

or, you can use file() which puts each line of the file into an array index....
